DARPA is seeking abstracts and proposals that focus on exploring the technical risks in producing strong wood products cleanly, efficiently and at a large scale from a feedstock of cellulose waste (scrap wood, cardboard, paper).

Proposals must address each of four research objectives:

  1.  Waste Feedstock Preprocessing – developing methods to pre-process scrap wood and paper product feedstock while maintaining fiber alignment,
  2. Highly Efficient Processes – reducing chemical and energy requirements associated with the production of densified wood,
  3. Favorable Mechanical Properties – developing products with extremely favorable physical/mechanical properties
  4. Production Scale – increasing production scale to DoD-relevant sizes.

Abstracts are due 15 August 2023.  Abstracts are not compulsory but are strongly encouraged.

Full proposals are due 14 September 2023.

An information webinar will be held 1 August 2023. Register here.

This solicitation is issued under the Biological Technologies Broad Agency Announcement (HR001123S0045)
