UK HMGCC – Imaging Hidden Objects in Walls

HMGCC Co-Creation is seeking imaging technologies to prevent unwanted surveillance by being able to uncover covert devices in the periphery of rooms, but without damaging walls.

HMGCC is particularly interested in non-ionising radiation techniques such as portable terahertz or millimetre-wave systems.

Up to £60,000 is available for projects of 12 weeks duration that can achieve a minimum TRL 5 demonstrator.

Essential Requirements

  • can be developed to weight of less than 20 kg and 0.3 cubic metres
  • display and user interface suitable for a technical user
  • able to produce images from penetrating a standard plasterboard wall
  • imager must use non-ionising radiation
  • single-phase power supply or battery
  • work towards being able to transport on a commercial flight

Desirable Requirements

  • work towards a weight of less than 20 kg
  • produce images from penetrating tens of centimetres through a standard plasterboard or wooden walls
  • stretch target – proof of concept of penetration through a few centimetres of concrete
  • imaging process should not require access to both sides of wall
