The US Department of Defense invites pre-applications for funding under the DWFP Program for original and innovative research that supports the development of new insecticides, or improved formulations of existing insecticides for vector control, new technology or enhanced modalities of personal protection from biting
arthropods, or improved efficacy and sustainability of equipment for application of pesticides.

Up to USD$975,000 is available for projects up to 3 years in duration.

Applications must address at least one of the following Research Areas:

  • Bite Prevention
  • Vector Control
  • Decision Support Tools or Software Applications
  • Vector Surveillance and Identification
  • Vector Pathogen Diagnostics

Proposed research should include

  • product-oriented research, consisting of advanced research related to a particular technology or new capability, field evaluation of products, or research directed towards the development of an existing prototype product for commercialisation
  • semi-field and/or field evaluation of prototype products
  • dual use research outcomes
  • outcomes designed for operation in military environments, including austere operating environments with limited logistical support
  • a focus on multiple target arthropod genera and/or species
  • a strategy for subsequent EPA registration

The proposed research may not include:

  • Fundamental basic research
  • Vector pathogen research
  • Clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic or vaccine research in humans, to include clinical trials
  • Testing to measure acute oral, dermal and/or inhalation toxicity
  • Costs paid to EPA for the registration of pesticide products
  • Testing and evaluation of products previously registered with the EPA, unless they are being
    developed for a new use
  • Testing and evaluation of commercial products, unless they are included in the testing of
    prototype products
  • Manufacturing, packaging and production costs

Pre-applications are due 4 October 2024.

Successful pre-applications will be invited to submit a full proposal by 28 January 2025.
