DARPA – Request for Information – Quantum-Limited Sensitivity Bandwidth Products

DARPA’s Microsystems Technology Office is seeking information regarding the fundamental limits of broadband electromagnetic sensing.

DARPA is interested in solutions that can meet or exceed the standard quantum limit of sensitivity bandwidth product. DARPA is looking for methodologies that enable truly interchangeable sensitivity and bandwidth across signal receive bands, which may span or tune across decades of the RF spectrum, from Hz levels to mm-wave
(60 GHz).

The goal of this Request for Information (RFI) is to understand the current state of the art and how recent advances in quantum sensing can be leveraged to create new classes of sensors.

DARPA is explicitly interested in techniques that can achieve or exceed the standard quantum limit for systems with large numbers of atoms or spins. Proposed techniques should enable a clear path towards trading between sensitivity and bandwidth and allow for broad frequency access across the RF spectrum.
If such devices are achievable, quantum sensing will revolutionize communications and other applications of the RF spectrum. DARPA is interested in all technologies that could be applied to enable the ultimate vision.
